Beethoven’s Eroica While Beethoven travelled to Vienna to break through as a pianist and composer, the French Revolution really started heating up. Ludwig even wholeheartedly dedicated his third symphony to the hero of the resistance, Napoleon. But when Napoleon replaced his democratic ideals with an emperor’s crown, Beethoven drew the line: it was no longer ‘Bonaparte’ who received the honour, but the ‘memory of a hero’: anonymous, in the past. And the symphony? Still brimming with youthful energy. Just like the young American conductor Rodrick Cox, who has been winning the heart of one orchestra after another, not to mention the audience!
