Sevdah
Sevdah… as it turns out, it’s not that simple to capture this Bosnian term in one word, except perhaps ‘longing.’ Similarly to the Spanish duende, it can mean many things: hopeless, endless love, a desire that will make lovers tremble with heat and cold, a feeling that’s impossible to shake. Amira Medunjanin is often referred to as the ‘Bosnian Billie Holiday,’ a comparison which rightfully implies that she turns sevdah inside out and gives new life to the centuries-old tradition – all it takes is a listen to one of her numerous albums.
