Yukine Kuroki
Schubert, Tokuyama, Mendelssohn
Competitions may be ‘for horses’ according to Bela Bartok, the young Japanese piano star Yukine Kuroki knows how to use them to her great advantage. Last year she convinced the jury of the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. At Wonderfeel she will go in a lyrical direction with five Schubert lieder arranged by Liszt, a movement from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Musica Nara by Minako Tokuyama. The competition commission from 2006 demands virtuosity and utter focus: a fluttering meditation on an ancient Japanese capital, where calm tower bells mark time in the life of gods and demons, of busy priests and smiling Buddhas.
