Caroline Burraways Ungrievable Lives consists of 13 children’s dresses made from life jackets left behind on Lesbos. Each represents one million of the 13 million refugee children worldwide—the war in Ukraine has raised that number to 15 million. They symbolize absence, loss, and the nearly impossible quest for safety. The dividing line between “us” and “them” turns out to be nothing more than a symbolic boundary of identity and culture. Charlotte Bray was deeply moved by Burraway’s installation and wrote her first string quartet, which you can hear at the installation in a performance by the ADAM Quartet.
