Interview with the creators
Hans Smit sits down with artist Caroline Burraway and composer Charlotte Bray at De BoekenBar to discuss their collaborative work Ungrievable Lives (2022): a poignant combination of a string quartet and an installation of thirteen children’s dresses, made from abandoned life jackets that Burraway collected at the “life jacket graveyard” on Lesbos. Each dress represents one million refugee children worldwide. Music and imagery converge in a work about absence, loss, and memory. As Burraway described it to The Guardian: “it felt like a physical blow—mountains of life jackets, piled meters high and slowly decaying, each shape an echo of a body.”
