They Have Waited Long Enough
Heroines of the Aegean Sea
In They have waited long enough (2021) we finally discovered the real story of the mythological Circe, Medea, and Penelope. Now we explore the coast of the other side of the Aegean Sea. The Turkish writer and activist Ece Temelkurangoves a voice to yet another three women: the mythological Şahmaran, who is a hybrid between a snake and a human, and a symbol of female (and non-binary) power; Kassia, who was born around 805 in Constantinopel and was the only female composer in Byzantian church music; and Suat Derviş, an author and left-wing activist who has always remained unapologetically herself. Brand new music by Meriç Artaç, Aida Shirazi, and Kate Moore for soprano Katharine Dain and a colourful ensemble.
Katharine Dain – soprano
Raphaëla Danksagmüller – duduk and kaval
Elif Canfeza Gündüz – kemenche
