Straight from the heart, rough as the Earth: folk music has always ‘done something’ to composers. Some would seduce their fashionable audience with a dash of flamenco here, a cute farmer’s dance there. Others, such as Bartók, travelled through Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia with a phonograph in order to record thousands of melodies themselves. Three fantastic artists with roots in the Western Balkans went into the kitchen together especially for this concert to cook up a spicy concert. Can you taste De Falla, Janáček, Schubert, the Croatian Ivan Padovec, and, indeed, Bartók?
