Hailu Mergia’s musical career started half a century ago in Addis Abbeba. His Walias Band was prominent in the funk and jazz scene of flourishing Ethiopian nightlife. In the early 80s he left to go to the United States, where he worked as a taxi driver for decades. But he always had his keyboard in the boot of the car, and of course a comeback was inevitable. His two recent albums, full of Ethio-jazz and laid-back grooves, are just that: a triumphant comeback.
